A solar power company will be established in Jamalpur's Motherganj in joint ownership with a Chinese company to produce 100 MW of solar power. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina chaired the cabinet on Monday (December 11) to approve such a decision in principle.

The meeting was chaired by Sheikh Hasina at the Prime Minister's office. After the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Md. Mahbub Hossain told reporters at the secretariat that, a joint venture company named Solar Power Company Limited will be established in Motherganj of Jamalpur district.

He said, this company will be formed in the joint venture of a Chinese company CREC International Renewable Energy Company and BR Powergen Limited (BRPL) of Bangladesh on about 300 acres of land. BRPL is a company owned by the Power Development Board and REB. Cabinet has given in-principle approval for setting up this company.

He also said that 30 percent of the plant will be owned by BRPL and 70 percent by the Chinese company. 100 MW of solar power will be produced here. A 20-year contract has been signed in thisregard.

Regarding the responsibilities of the Chinese company in the formation of this company, the Cabinet Secretary said that information will be available from the concerned ministry.

However, although the Chinese company owns 70 percent, they are responsible for the entire loan. They will take charge of domestic and foreign loans. That is, Bangladesh does not have to provide any sovereign guarantor for the formation of this company. They will also have proportionate investment as well.
